Girl Scout Troop #2854 in Crown Heights
Girl Scout Troop #2854
Keep an eye out for the emblematic Girl Scouts of America vest this spring! Troop #2854 is often selling cookies in front of Lula Bagel on Sunday mornings. This group of young girls ranging from grades 5 through 6 meet regularly in Crown Heights to build courage, confidence and character as well as lasting friendships.
Tara Kashyap, owner of Lula Bagel and Lula Bird decided to start a troop in Crown Heights for her daughter and other girls. Tara recruited a few other neighborhood parents to co-lead the troop with her. Anne Kenney, Mik Larson and Celeste Stern joined to lead the girls in a variety of activities.
Among other things, the troop has visited the SIMS Recycling Plant and the Brooklyn Grange, learned how to make jewelry, presented art work created by each troop member, took a weekend camping trip to Frost Valley in the Catskills and did an sleepover at the New York Hall of Science.
These young scouts enjoy making friends from other schools, earning badges, going on adventures, meeting people in the community and of course, selling cookies. Troop #2854 earns a portion of each cookie sale which in turn funds their activities. Overall, it has been a very enriching experience for the scouts and the leaders.
“I look forward to getting the girls together and giving them structured activities to help them grow and become leaders,” said Anne Kenney, co leader.
“I really enjoy getting to know girls in the neighborhood and have a special opportunity to spend time with my daughter,” added Mik Larson, another co-leader.
Most of the troop live in the Crown Heights area but others come from Bed Stuy and Prospect Heights. If you are interested in having your child join, please contact Celeste Stern at 917-319-8753.
